These local organisations hold archives and other resources useful to family history researchers.

Ancestor's Attic is run by members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists Nelson Branch. The branch has a large collection of resources related mainly to the Nelson Region. Collections include 1845 and 1849 Census information for Nelson, as well as assorted school records and family histories.

Anglican Centre - Nelson Diocese
Archives include registers for all Anglican churches in the Diocese including Marlborough, Mohua/Golden Bay, Nelson, Kaikōura and most of the West Coast, such as Nelson Cathedral registers from 1842 onwards, Māori baptismal records, marriage and burial records and Māori marriage records prior to 1850.

St Mary’s Parish - Catholic Archives
St Mary’s archives include sacramental registers from 1844 onwards, parish newsletters, and minutes from parish and school organisations, St Joseph’s School admission records, orphanage records. The Nelson Parish once incorporated Blenheim, Kaikōura, Picton, and the West Coast, as well as the Nelson and Tasman townships.

Nelson Family History Centre
The Family History Centre collections include microfiche birth, death and marriage indexes for New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. They also provide free access to a large collection of early magazines and newspapers and free access to the church's Family Search website.
