Recently I have taken up vegetable gardening as a hobby. My grandad would always say, "Start planting your vegetables Labour Weekend."  I was a bit confused as I kept hearing of people starting their gardens way earlier than Labour Weekend. I felt left behind and in quite a pickle!

In the end, and being a Librarian, books were my solution to this pickle. I found the selection of vegetable gardening books a bit overwhelming but settled on the Yates Garden guide. What a life saver! I found everything I needed to know to get started on my vegetable garden.

These are my lettuces! I do wish they were like these 1930s lettuce though.
