This book is a richly illustrated history of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Māui (the top of the South Island) which includes local creation stories, to Polynesian migration, to European contact.

Woven together from traditional oral histories and documented accounts, this regional history encompasses the succession of tribes who have lived in Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka a Māui, early encounters with Europeans, the arrival of the New Zealand Company, Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), land transactions, and the administration of Māori reserves.
